Cool Tech Tools for Teachers to Beat the Summer Heat

Beat the heat this summer with these cool tech tools for teachers.

It seems as if every few minutes another bigger, better, or cooler tech app is released. And just as we get used to one tool, it morphs into something else, now costs money, or simply disappears. What’s a teacher to do?

To keep up, consider bookmarking the following sites and blogs because the work’s already been done for you!

  • Edudemic (http://www.edudemic.com): With a tagline like “Connecting education and technology,” Edudemic is one of my go-to sites. They deliver what they promise—a comprehensive look at EdTech issues—and opportunities–facing PK-college educators.
  • Kathy Schrock’s Guide to Everything (http://www.schrockguide.net./edtech-blogs.html): This lady is the powerhouse who got me interested in everything edtech. The link will take you to her list of recommended blogs.
  • Educational Technology & Mobile Learning (http://www.educatorstechnology.com): This “resource of educational web tools and mobile apps for teachers and educators” covers everything from Google apps to iPad apps to infographics. A real treasure.
  • Virtual School Meanderings (https://virtualschooling.wordpress.com): This site is hosted by a professor of instructional technology and Education Evaluation and Research. Good stuff.

And here are some apps to explore:

  • Microsoft Mix (https://mix.office.com): If you’re a Windows-based Powerpoint user, consider downloading the free add-in called Mix. Play with voice, video and digital ink, polls and interactive apps, and more. It’s Powerpoint on steroids.
  • Planboard (http://www.planboardapp.com) is a free app that helps with lesson planning. Add attachments, graphics and videos, then build lesson templates to save time. You can attach standard sets and monitor student progress. You can even share lessons with colleagues in the same building–or around the world.
