Investigation: Building Community
Whether school is online, face-to-face or a hybrid of both, the science is clear -- relationships matter! Research tells us that emotion and learning are intertwined, and students who feel safe and supported by adults are better able to learn. That means when building online classrooms, your first priority should be to nurture positive teacher-to-student and student-to-student connections. To learn more about these important connections, complete the following:
- Watch this video on why building strong relationships with students is key to their success.
- Read these articles to learn some foundational components for building relationships from a distance.
- Review this list of Creative Ways Teachers Are Building Classroom Community Online from WeAreTeachers and this article on Social-Emotional Learning Activities for Online Teaching.
- Finally, in your journal, make a list of 10 strategies or activities you plan to implement as you build and/or sustain your online community of learners. As a reminder, the journal is for your own learning and reflection and will not be submitted.
