It’s 2019, and technology continues to reshape teaching trends in and out of the classroom. One of the most challenging obstacles for teachers is knowing what’s new, what’s coming, and how this technology can be used to infuse new tactics to engage, educate, and learn. This year, the trends are about building the “Intelligent Digital Mesh” which encompasses:
- Intelligence – AI drives everything we do across many systems going into the future;
- Digital – The digital world brings the virtual and real worlds together in a new digital reality; and,
- Mesh – Connecting people, processes, and things together in new and interesting ways.
Here are some of the top trends this year:
1. Gamification
Gamification continues to hold a place in the classroom, driving engagement and interaction at high levels. One of the big draws of using game-like principles is the fact that it allows teachers to provide context and outcomes for the students on their level while improving both comprehension and retention.
2. AI and Machine Learning
Artificial intelligence is not new, but it is being utilized more frequently in the classroom to improve education. Machine learning is also penetrating classrooms. These two trends work to fill gaps in teaching and learning, with direct classroom application. They also remove biases, which play a significant role in improving assessment and evaluation.
3. Blended learning in K-12
Although blended learning has already been introduced, in 2019, it’s here to stay. This is an indication of how our reality is changing for good. This includes AI-based tutoring systems, broadcasted lessons, and access to interactive classroom experiences all over the world. Flipped classrooms, where teachers combine in-classroom instruction and group-learning experiences with at-home access to continue student lessons will become an everyday occurrence.
4. More opportunities for personalized and adaptive learning
Utilizing a learning system that adapts to an individual student’s strengths, needs and interests helps teachers meet the challenge of having to teach to multiple levels within one classroom. It also makes learning more interesting and motivating which will increase student ownership and self-efficacy. Personalization and adaptive learning allow students to focus on and review material that is most relevant to them.
5. Immersive technology will increase in availability
With 5G front and center, along with improved hardware and software, this means better access to technology for all communities. Teachers will also be able to adapt their classrooms and lesson plans to make the most of the technology, which can be used in every field of study.
