+Renew Your License | State Requirements

Illinois educators and school support services personnel may meet license renewal requirements through the successful completion of coursework from a regionally accredited Illinois College or University.

One semester credit = 15 clock-hours of professional development 

 

Per ISBE requirements, if you hold one of the following licenses, renewal is required every five years: 

Teachers: 120 clock-hours of professional development for licensees holding endorsements in teaching fields, or endorsements for school support personnel. You can meet your 120 clock-hours in a number of ways. 

Example 1: Reading Focus 

5030: Focus on Phonics for Effective Reading, Writing, and Spelling Instruction (45 hours) 

5040: Increasing Comprehension with Close Reading in Your Classroom (45 hours) 

5131: Headings, Highlights, and Other Active Strategies for Comprehending Digital Texts (15 hours) 

5042: The Reading Fluency Toolbox (15 hours) 

Example 2: SEL Focus 

5203: Social and Emotional Learning Starts with You (45 hours) 

5102: Anxiety Awareness: Empowering Students with Help and Hope (45 hours) 

5018: Incorporating Mindfulness: Strategies to Encourage Student Focus and Awareness (30 hours) 

 

NBPTS Master Teachers: 60 clock hours of professional development for a licensee holding a current National Board for Professional Teaching Standards master teacher designation. You can earn your 60 hours learning about a number of topics. 

Example 1: Mental Health Focus 

854: Caring for the Mental Health of Your Students (15 hours) 

5102: Anxiety Awareness: Empowering Students with Help and Hope (45 hours) 

Example 2: Tech for Engagement 

804: Consumer to Creator: Coding and Kids (15 hours) 

5134: Teaching with Immersive Technologies (45 hours) 

 

Administrators and Teacher Leaders:100 clock hours of professional development, plus completion of one Administrators' Academy course each fiscal year of the 5-year renewal cycle. Consider the following courses: 

5084: Impactful Instructional Coaching: Reflection, Support, Growth (45 hours) 

898: Mindful Leadership in Schools (45 hours) 

854: Caring for the Mental Health of Your Students (15 hours)
